How to Pet Proof Your Home Before Bringing a New Animal Home

It’s finally happened – you’ve welcomed a new four-legged family member into your home! You’re excited to have this new addition, but before you can fully enjoy your time with them, there are a few things you need to do to pet proof your home. Pets can be very curious and destructive, so it’s important to take the necessary precautions to protect your belongings and furniture. In this blog post, we will discuss some tips on how to pet proof your home before bringing a new animal into the family!

Secure Your Wires and Cables

Pets are very curious and may be tempted to chew or tug on exposed wires. Take the time to properly secure all of your wires and cables, either by tucking them away behind furniture or using protective covers. Additionally, make sure you move any pets away from areas with exposed outlets, as they can get shocked if they happen to come into contact with it. For example, if you have a fish tank with an exposed outlet, make sure to place the tank in a location where your pet can’t reach it.

Cover Sharp Edges

Sharp edges around tables and other furniture can not only cause injury to your pet, but also scratching damage to your hardwood floors. To prevent this, use corner guards to cover up any sharp points or edges in your home that might injure the animal. For example, if you have a coffee table with sharp corners, use corner guards to prevent your pet from getting hurt.

Put Away Small Items

Small items such as coins, jewelry, and other trinkets can easily be swallowed by pets. To stay safe, make sure to put away all of these items in cabinets out of reach from your pet. Additionally, place any toxic chemicals or cleaners away in storage as well – animals can get into them if given the chance! For example, if you have an antifreeze container in the garage, make sure to store it away somewhere where your pet cannot access it.

Provide a Safe Place for Your Pet

To ensure that your pet feels comfortable and secure in their new home, provide them with a bed or crate where they can relax without fear of being disturbed. This will also help them adjust to the environment more quickly. For example, if you have a puppy that is prone to chewing on furniture and other objects, provide them with plenty of chew toys in their bed or crate so they have something to focus their attention on instead of your belongings.

Set Boundaries

Set boundaries for your pet. Make sure to clearly mark off areas that they are not allowed in, such as the kitchen or bedroom. This can help prevent any unwanted behavior and encourage them to stay away from potential hazards in your home.

Easy Access to Outside

Pets need easy access to outside. Make sure that you provide them with a pet door so they can go outside to do their business or just get some fresh air. Additionally, it’s important to keep the area surrounding your home clean and safe by regularly cleaning up after your pet. Look at the best sliding glass pet door for pet owners. And make sure to check the weather forecast too, as you don’t want your pet wandering around in extreme temperatures.

Get Rid of Pests

It’s important to keep your home free of pests, such as mice and other rodents. Not only can they carry diseases, but they can also cause a lot of damage if they get into your home. Make sure to have regular pest control treatments done in order to keep them away from your pet and property.

Inspect Regularly

Once you’ve taken all the necessary steps to pet proof your home, it’s important to regularly inspect for any potential hazards. Check for anything that may have been exposed or moved and take action if needed. This will ensure that your pet stays safe and sound in their new home!

Have Fun!

Most importantly, remember to have fun with your pet and give them lots of love and attention. This is a great time for both you and your pet to get to know each other, so enjoy it!

By taking these steps, you can protect both your belongings and your new pet from harm. Pet proofing may seem like a daunting task, but it’s important to take the time to do it properly – after all, it could save you from a lot of repair work down the line! With proper preparation and a little bit of patience, you’ll be able to enjoy every moment with your furry friend for years to come.

Hi, I’m Christine

Have you been a wholehearted mother, but time, toddlers and teenagers have moved on? If you are wondering what comes next for you, you’ll feel right at home here.

Or, are you a mom for whom family life has been non-Pinworthy and parenting has been downright painful? I hear ya. There are many of us around.

Are you looking for a life full of exploration and adventure after the nest empties, but maybe you have no idea how to go about doing that? Stick around! We’ll explore adventures together to help you gain more clarity for your own path.

After a couple decades of writing books and articles about parenting, homeschooling and adoption, speaking to homeschoolers and other parent groups, and reaching out to the mom in the trenches who was trying to make the best of it - my kids grew up. Some grew up and grew away. I was determined to find a way out of the pain, emptiness and lack of direction.

For many of us, the journey starts with something we moms are not accustomed to. After years of caring for and serving others, sometimes we forget the beauty and wonder of US. We need to spend some time getting to know the parts of ourselves that have lain dormant, and take the time to explore interests and passions that we set aside.

I’d like to invite you to get the “What’s Next for Mom” workbook and jump into this growing tribe of Moms who are emptying the nest and filling the life! Let’s reignite your Mojo after Mothering!
