You Are Allowed to Have a Life That Is Your Own

April 25, 2026 By Christine Field

There comes a point, often quietly and without warning, when motherhood shifts.

The calls come less often. The house stays clean longer. The urgency that once filled every hour begins to loosen its grip.

And somewhere in that space, a question begins to rise.

Now what?

Not in a dramatic, life-altering way.
In a quieter, more unsettling way.

Because for years, your life made sense.

You were needed.
You were responsible.
You were central to someone else’s story.

And now… you are still a mother. But you are no longer in the center of everything.

That shift can feel like loss.

But it is also an invitation.

The Life You Built Was Real—But It Was Not the Whole Story

You did not imagine it.

Motherhood required you to pour yourself out in ways most people never fully see. Your time, your energy, your attention, your identity.

You became the one who remembered everything.
The one who held things together.
The one who adjusted, sacrificed, stayed, showed up.

That life mattered. It still matters.

But if you are honest, parts of you were set aside along the way.

Not because you were weak.
Because you were devoted.

And now those parts are not gone.

They are waiting.

Why Reclaiming Your Life Feels So Hard

It is not just about figuring out what to do next.

It is about facing what comes up when the noise quiets down.

There can be grief.
Not just for what changed, but for what never had space to grow.

There can be guilt.
A subtle feeling that focusing on yourself is somehow a betrayal.

There can be fear.
Because building something new means stepping into uncertainty without the familiar structure motherhood once gave you.

This is why so many women stay stuck in this in-between space.

Not because they lack desire.
Because they do not yet trust themselves to move forward.

Reclaiming Your Life Is Not About Reinventing Everything

You do not need to blow up your life.

You do not need a dramatic reinvention story.

You need something steadier than that.

Reclaiming your life begins with small, honest decisions.

What do you enjoy now?
What feels energizing instead of draining?
What matters to you when no one else is asking something from you?

This is not about becoming someone new.

It is about returning to parts of yourself that were never meant to disappear.

Start With What Is Already There

You may not feel clear yet.

That is okay.

Clarity rarely comes first.

It grows from action.

Take one step that belongs to you.

Not because it is productive.
Not because it looks impressive.
Because it feels true.

It might be writing again.
Taking a class.
Reaching out to someone you lost touch with.
Letting yourself rest without explaining it to anyone.

Small steps create movement.
Movement creates identity.

You Are Not Behind

This part matters more than most people say out loud.

You are not late to your own life.

You did not miss your chance.

You were living a different chapter.

Now you are in a new one.

And this chapter is not smaller.

It is just yours in a way it has not been for a very long time.

The Emotional Shift That Changes Everything

At some point, something quiet but powerful happens.

You stop asking:

What do they need from me?

And you begin asking:

What do I need from my life now?

That shift is not selfish.

It is honest.

And it is where your next chapter begins.

A Gentle Word About Boundaries

As you begin reclaiming your life, something else becomes clear.

You cannot build something new while constantly being pulled back into old patterns.

This is where boundaries matter.

Not harsh, rigid ones.
Steady ones.

The kind that protect your time, your emotional energy, and your ability to grow.

If this is the part that feels hardest, you are not alone.

It is why I created Crisis Proof Boundaries—for those moments when you feel pulled apart and unsure how to hold your ground without losing connection.

You Are Allowed to Begin Again

Not from scratch.

From experience.

From strength you did not know you were building all along.

From a life that has shaped you in ways that matter.

You are allowed to want more now.

You are allowed to build something that reflects who you are today.

And you are allowed to take your time doing it.

If you need more help in this area, especially with adult children, this might be helpful for you:  Crisis Proof Boundaries.

Let’s Discuss: What is one part of yourself you feel ready to reconnect with right now?

Hi! I’m Christine!

It’s Never Too Late to Rewrite Your Story

If you’re standing at a crossroads—wondering where the “you” you used to know went—you are not alone.

Maybe you spent years pouring yourself into your family, homeschooling, raising kids with big needs and even bigger hearts.
Maybe you’re navigating a broken marriage, facing an empty nest that feels a lot emptier than you ever imagined, or grieving distance from your adult children.

You may be asking yourself: What happened to the life I dreamed of?
What happens now?

Here’s the truth:
It’s never too late to rewrite your story.

No matter the detours or disappointments, there is still hope.
There are still beautiful chapters ahead, waiting for you to write them.

My Story

Hi, I’m Christine—a marriage and motherhood survivor, a recovering perfectionist, and a woman determined to live the second half of life with purpose, passion, and a whole lot of pizzazz.

I spent decades doing what many women do: pouring myself into my family, raising children (some with big needs and even bigger hearts), homeschooling, navigating a long and complicated marriage, and trying to be everything for everyone. Somewhere in all of that, I lost parts of myself I didn’t even realize were gone.

During those intense years of deep mothering, I also wrote seven books for major Christian publishers about parenting, adoption, and homeschooling. I spoke at conferences, encouraged other moms, and tried to offer wisdom from the trenches.

And then—everything I held dear was challenged.

My kids started struggling in ways I couldn’t fix.
My marriage unraveled.
And so did the life I had so carefully built.

Divorce, the empty nest, the ache of adult children who didn’t launch quite the way I’d hoped—it all collided at once.

Sound familiar?

But here’s the good news:
It’s never too late to rewrite your story.

Now in my late 60s, I’m building a rich, meaningful life—not despite the hard chapters, but because of them.
I started dating again (and got married in May 2025!), I’m working full-time in my career as a criminal lawyer, and I’m dreaming bigger than ever.
I’m a woman of faith who’s walked through the fire—and found new life on the other side.

Let’s Walk This Road Together

If you’re wondering what’s next after the life you planned didn’t turn out the way you hoped, you’re in the right place.
We don’t have to shrink or settle.
We get to rise, reclaim, and sparkle.

So pour a cup of coffee (or something stronger), and let’s keep going, together.
