Why Your Home Isn’t As Clean As You’d Like It To Be

Everyone wants a clean home, but it can be surprisingly difficult to make this a reality. If you find that you are constantly trying to make this happen, but your home is just never as clean as you would like, you are not alone.

spring cleaning

A lot of people have this experience, and it is certainly something that can be incredibly frustrating. Of course, there are always solutions, and sometimes those solutions are much simpler than you might have assumed they would be. In this article, we are going to look at some of the things that you can do if you are to try and make your home much cleaner, by focusing in particular on a number of the reasons your home might not be as clean as you would currently like it to be. This should help you to understand how to keep it cleaner for longer, and so enjoy your home much more.

You’re Not Spring Cleaning

It doesn’t matter how often you carry out a light clean – if you are not also making a point of spring cleaning on a regular basis, then you will find that your home is not going to be as clean as you would like on the whole. Avoiding those deep cleans means that you never actually make much of a difference to the home on the whole, so it is definitely something you will want to avoid if you can help it. If you don’t often get to spring cleaning, consider doing so from now as often as you can. Ideally, you will at least deep clean once a fortnight, but more often than that even would be good as well.

When it comes to spring cleaning, you also need to make sure that you are doing it in the right manner. It’s no use spending a lot of time on it if you are not doing it effectively, as that will just mean that you are not really doing anything for your home at all. Spring cleaning should be carried out thoroughly so that you can make sure it is actually making some kind of a difference to your home.

You’re Only Spring Cleaning

That being said, if you are only ever doing these deep cleans, you are still in trouble. Only spring cleaning, and not carrying out those important and essential daily cleaning tasks, means that you are going to struggle to keep your space as clean as possible. If you find that you generally let your home build up its dirt and then get rid of it in one go, it might look clean afterwards – but most of the time, it just won’t be. So make sure that, as well as carrying out those essential deep occasional cleans, you are also cleaning regularly day after day, in a lighter and more surface way. Both of these are essential if you are to really keep your home as clean as you possibly can.

You Own Too Much

One of the most common reasons that people might struggle with keeping their homes clean is that they just have too much stuff in the home. If you have a lot of items and belongings in your home which you don’t know what to do with, you will inevitably find that clutter builds up much faster than you would hope. This clutter means that the whole place looks like a mess, no matter how well you actually technically do clean it. It will also mean that cleaning itself takes longer and is harder, as there are that many more surfaces for dust to collect and hide behind and so on. So it’s a vital move, if you want a cleaner home, to make sure that you are not filling your home with too much clutter.

How do you go about removing the extraneous clutter from your home? It can actually be quite simple, so long as you don’t allow yourself to become too sentimental with your belongings. For instance, you can go around and simply throw away anything which you feel you have not used in perhaps twelve months. This process alone will get rid of a lot, and then it will just be a case of not trying to collect more stuff again in the meantime. If you can do this, you will find it considerably easier to keep your home truly clean.

You Have Pests

It’s unfortunate when a home gets pests of any kind, but it is something that can happen to even the cleanest of homes, and is not always a reflection on the state of the play itself. But when it does happen, it generally has a way of making keeping the place clean even harder, and this is due to a number of reasons. Most of all, of course, having pests means that they are going to leave their waste lying around, which is not only unhealthy but also unsightly. If you do find that your home has developed a pest problem, you will want to make sure you deal with them as soon as possible – but how?

First of all, the best method is to simply get the professionals in. Calling in the professional pest control services is the only way to make sure that you will actually get rid of them for good. Anything else you might do yourself is much less likely to be as effective, and besides they will be able to keep an eye on them for you and ensure that they do not return in the future. You should then make a point, of course, of keeping the home clean, so that those pests cannot return at any point. The more you do this, the more you keep up on your cleanliness, the better.

You Have Children

Of course, if you happen to have a family home, you will find that it is especially difficult to be able to keep your home clean as much as you would like to. The biggest reason for this is the children, of course: they are naturally very messy and dirty, and all parents know too well just how true this can be in the home. But having children doesn’t mean that you simply have to accept having an unclean home, and there are always things you can do to make sure that you keep your home as clean as possible anyway.

One great way for families to keep their home clean is to make a point of working together on the cleanliness. You can’t do this with a newborn, of course, but by the time they are teenagers you should absolutely make a point of getting them involved. Set up a roster for cleaning and you will soon find that the home is much cleaner most of the time. You will also be helping to develop some good manners and behaviors in your kids, of course, which is a nice added bonus that you should not overlook.

You’re Doing It All Yourself

It doesn’t matter how good you might be at cleaning: if you are always doing it yourself, then it is unlikely that it is going to be as good as you would like it to be. For this reason, it’s always wise to bring in the professional cleaners whenever you want to make sure that your home can have a really good clean. The more often you do this, the better, and you will find that it is incredibly affordable too. Make sure you get the cleaners in at least once every two months.

Hi, Christine – Great tips. I especially LOVE your final one! That’s something that many of us (like me) need to give ourselves permission to do. #MLSTL

Fortunately none of these really apply to me. I have a husband who is tidy like me and who shares the housework. He is even more thorough than I am, so our cats don’t get a chance to leave hair around for long and our children were aware that they needed to put things away. I think being on top of things helps keep the process down to a manageable level – and being fairly minimalistic means there’s also less to dust!
Thanks for linking up with us at MLSTL and I’ve shared on my SM 🙂

Great tips! You are so right, pets, children, and having to do it all yourself are huge issues. Another one is wood stoves. I have two of them and the dust and smoke film they generate are unbelievable! Visiting from MSTL.

Hi Christine we are in the midst of selling a home so cleanliness and presentation have been my priority for the last month. I’m not sure the house as ever been this clean but you have to keep on top of it. I wash the floors and five minutes later there is some spot or other that has appeared. My daughter works full time and with two boys under 5 budgets for a house cleaner to come in fortnightly. I think it is definitely money well spent. Thanks for sharing your tips at #MLSTL and have a great week. x

Hi, I’m Christine

Have you been a wholehearted mother, but time, toddlers and teenagers have moved on? If you are wondering what comes next for you, you’ll feel right at home here.

Or, are you a mom for whom family life has been non-Pinworthy and parenting has been downright painful? I hear ya. There are many of us around.

Are you looking for a life full of exploration and adventure after the nest empties, but maybe you have no idea how to go about doing that? Stick around! We’ll explore adventures together to help you gain more clarity for your own path.

After a couple decades of writing books and articles about parenting, homeschooling and adoption, speaking to homeschoolers and other parent groups, and reaching out to the mom in the trenches who was trying to make the best of it - my kids grew up. Some grew up and grew away. I was determined to find a way out of the pain, emptiness and lack of direction.

For many of us, the journey starts with something we moms are not accustomed to. After years of caring for and serving others, sometimes we forget the beauty and wonder of US. We need to spend some time getting to know the parts of ourselves that have lain dormant, and take the time to explore interests and passions that we set aside.

I’d like to invite you to get the “What’s Next for Mom” workbook and jump into this growing tribe of Moms who are emptying the nest and filling the life! Let’s reignite your Mojo after Mothering!
