Summer is coming!
For some of us, that means we will have an extended time to spend with our grandkids. I look forward to it!
Grandkids are a special blessing. But they are different from kids of prior generations.
My kids were happy with soap bubbles and sidewalk chalk when they were little. Today, it seems, even toddlers scan their environment for all available screens and lock into the electronic devices.
In planning your summer time with Grandma, you can make “screen time” productive and a learning experience!
In the past, I subscribed to ABCmouse to use with my grandson. When he became weary of hands on fun, or when it was just time to chill out a bit, we made the best of that down time.
ABCmouse offers a huge range of activities. There are 850 lessons across 10 levels of ability. Children can do lessons sequentially, or, in some subjects, they can move around. Subject areas include reading and language arts, math, science and social studies, and art and colors.
In my grandson’s obsession with the solar system, we jumped around in the science area to suit his interests. He enjoyed the fun aspect of the site and I allowed him freedom to explore. When we worked on more sequential learning, like math and reading, we kept closer to the planned activities.
Activities are appropriate for kids ages 3 – 7 and include games, books, songs, art, and printables. Lessons are built to allow you to track the child’s progress through the lessons.
You can check out ABCmouse for one month for FREE. That gives you enough time to see if this is something you want to facilitate your grandchild having access to throughout the year.
Kids love this site and kids love computers. We generally used in on a tablet computer and had lots of nice cuddle time while he was learning.
If you are planning your summer activities with grandkids, check out ABCmouse!
My friend, Virginia Vagt, and I created a low-tech collections of seasonal based activities to do with children. Her daughter is a talented artist and she created the cover for this book. Whether you’re a granny or a mom looking for a simpler summer, I encourage you to check out Seasonal Savors.
