Tips for Building an Outdoor Nook for Reading and Knitting

A woman smiles as she reads a book and sits in a hammock outdoors. Trees and bushes grow behind her.
As you enter a new stage in your life, with the children grown and the house a little quieter, it is the perfect time to reclaim a piece of your world just for you. Creating a personal sanctuary allows you to reconnect with your favorite hobbies and enjoy the peace you so richly deserve.
These tips for building an outdoor nook for reading and knitting will help you design a beautiful space to unwind, create, and simply be. This project is an excellent way to celebrate your next chapter by carving out a corner of nature for your own enjoyment and relaxation.

Find Your Perfect Spot

The first step in creating your personal haven is scouting the ideal location. Walk around your property at different times of day to observe the light and listen to the ambient sounds. You might find a quiet corner of your porch, a secluded spot under a large shade tree, or a section of your deck that feels just right.
Consider how much privacy you will have from neighbors and how much protection the spot will offer from the elements, such as wind and sun. The goal is to find a space that naturally feels calm and separate from the comings and goings of daily life, so you can truly escape into your book or knitting project.

Choose the Perfect Seat

At the heart of any nook is a comfortable place to sit for extended periods of time. Instead of choosing stiff, formal patio furniture, look for a deep-seated armchair, a cozy loveseat with plush cushions, or even a hanging chair or hammock that invites you to curl up.
Weather-resistant fabrics are essential for outdoor use, so seek out furniture with materials that can withstand sun and moisture. Test out different options if you can, ensuring the chair provides good back support and is the right height for you to sit comfortably with your feet on the ground.

Add a Sturdy Side Table

A functional side table is non-negotiable for an outdoor nook for reading and knitting. You will need a stable surface to hold your cup of tea, your current book, your pattern, and your phone. The table should be at a convenient height so you can easily reach it from your chair without straining.
Materials like teak, sealed metal, or all-weather wicker are excellent choices for durability. Consider a table with a small lower shelf for extra storage, which is perfect for stashing away your knitting bag or a stack of magazines when they are not in use.

Incorporate Soft Textiles for Coziness

To transform your nook from a patio chair into a truly inviting retreat, you must layer in soft textiles. An outdoor-friendly rug can define the space and add warmth underfoot. Drape a soft, washable throw blanket over the back of your chair for chilly evenings or breezy afternoons.
Add a few plush, weather-resistant pillows for extra comfort and lumbar support, especially when you plan to sit for a while. These elements add color, texture, and a sense of indulgent comfort to your personal oasis.

Surround Yourself with Greenery

Integrating plants and flowers into your nook will enhance its connection to nature and create a more serene atmosphere. Use a variety of planters to bring life directly into your space. Place a large potted plant, such as a Ficus or palm, next to your chair to create a sense of enclosure and privacy.
Arrange smaller pots with colorful flowers or fragrant herbs on your side table or on the ground around you. The sight and smell of living plants can have a wonderfully calming effect, making your nook an even more restorative place to spend your time.

Plan for Essential Lighting

To extend your nook’s use into the beautiful evening hours, you need to consider lighting. Soft, warm light creates an atmosphere perfect for unwinding.
If you want to save money on your energy bills, consider shopping for a solar lamp post for your yard. The proper illumination will let you see every word of your book or help you avoid a potential needlestick injury after the sun goes down.

Ensure Easy Access to Supplies

A well-organized nook makes relaxation effortless. Think about how you will store your reading and knitting materials so they are always within reach. A beautiful woven basket placed next to your chair is perfect for holding yarn, needles, and works in progress.
You could also use a small set of outdoor shelves or a weather-resistant storage box that doubles as extra seating. Keeping everything you need close by means you will not have to interrupt your quiet time to fetch a forgotten item, allowing you to stay immersed in your hobby.

Add a Touch of Personal Style

This space is all about you, so be sure to infuse it with your unique personality. Decorate your nook with items that bring you joy. This could be a set of wind chimes that create a soothing sound, a small water feature for tranquil background noise, or a few pieces of garden art that make you smile.
Maybe you want to hang a piece of outdoor-safe wall art or place a special sculpture nearby. These personal touches are what make the space feel truly your own and not just a generic outdoor seating area.

Consider Shade and Weather Protection

To make your nook usable in various weather conditions, think about protection from the elements. If your chosen spot is not already covered, an outdoor umbrella is a simple and effective solution for providing shade from the midday sun and shelter from a light drizzle.
For a more permanent structure, you could install a small pergola and grow a beautiful vine over it for natural shade. Retractable awnings are another excellent option that offers flexibility. Being prepared for sun and light rain means you can enjoy your nook more often throughout the year.
Your outdoor nook is a testament to this new, exciting phase of life—a space dedicated entirely to your peace and passions. By creating this personal retreat, you are investing in your own well-being and happiness. Enjoy every quiet moment spent there, surrounded by the comfort and beauty you have so thoughtfully curated.

Maybe you’re navigating a broken marriage, facing an empty nest that feels a lot emptier than you ever imagined, or grieving distance from your adult children.

You may be asking yourself: What happened to the life I dreamed of?
What happens now?

Here’s the truth:
It’s never too late to rewrite your story.

No matter the detours or disappointments, there is still hope.
There are still beautiful chapters ahead, waiting for you to write them.

My Story

Hi, I’m Christine—a marriage and motherhood survivor, a recovering perfectionist, and a woman determined to live the second half of life with purpose, passion, and a whole lot of pizzazz.

I spent decades doing what many women do: pouring myself into my family, raising children (some with big needs and even bigger hearts), homeschooling, navigating a long and complicated marriage, and trying to be everything for everyone. Somewhere in all of that, I lost parts of myself I didn’t even realize were gone.

During those intense years of deep mothering, I also wrote seven books for major Christian publishers about parenting, adoption, and homeschooling. I spoke at conferences, encouraged other moms, and tried to offer wisdom from the trenches.

And then—everything I held dear was challenged.

My kids started struggling in ways I couldn’t fix.
My marriage unraveled.
And so did the life I had so carefully built.

Divorce, the empty nest, the ache of adult children who didn’t launch quite the way I’d hoped—it all collided at once.

Sound familiar?

But here’s the good news:
It’s never too late to rewrite your story.

Now in my late 60s, I’m building a rich, meaningful life—not despite the hard chapters, but because of them.
I started dating again (and got married in May 2025!), I’m working full-time in my career as a criminal lawyer, and I’m dreaming bigger than ever.
I’m a woman of faith who’s walked through the fire—and found new life on the other side.

Let’s Walk This Road Together

If you’re wondering what’s next after the life you planned didn’t turn out the way you hoped, you’re in the right place.
We don’t have to shrink or settle.
We get to rise, reclaim, and sparkle.

So pour a cup of coffee (or something stronger), and let’s keep going, together.
