The American Medical Association is an influential group, supposedly composed of the best and the brightest to advise and guide doctors and the practice of medicine.
One of their latest proclamations is a real winner.
The idea of a transgender person is per se troubling to me. It must take some special kind of self-hatred to want to mutilate the body you were born with to become something you weren’t born to be.
In states now, the good people at the vital stats office will change the sex designation on your birth certificate if you can prove you had a sex change operation. Fair enough.
The AMA “adopted new policy supporting the elimination of any government requirement that an individual must have undergone surgery in order to change the sex indicated on a birth certificate.”
The AMA’s concern is that transgenders have access to appropriate medical care, regardless of what’s on their birth certificate.
So I imagine one could mozy on in to the clerk’s office and say, “Today I feel like a ……”
Wham. Now I’m something that I’m not.
In the early days of medicine, docs were cautioned to remember that they weren’t playing God.
While transgenders may feel that God has played them by making them the wrong sex, this is ridiculous.
Pretty soon, we’ll be paying for it.
