As a “woman of a certain age,” I have been on the lookout for role models in the journey of aging. I want to age with purpose and passion and have a good time along the way.
On With The Butter: Spread more living into everyday life by Heidi Herman offers delicious ideas to emulate.
What’s with the name of the book?
Everything is better with butter. Corn bread, toast, vegetables!
The author’s mom hails from Iceland where there is an expression, “on with the butter,” which means that in life we should carry on, keep moving, or forge ahead. Life is short and should be savored and enjoyed. Don’t spare the fun or the adventure – or the butter!
Ms. Herman shares stores of her mother’s interesting and full life. She lived well into her nineties and, even after a stroke at age 92, she packed lots of life into her days. The author refers to her mom as a life adventurer. I love that! I aspire to have the rest of my life be filled with adventure!
Whether you are retired, thinking about retiring, or have no retirement on the horizon, maybe you’d like to add more spice to your life. The 15 chapters of this book are jammed with ideas to seek out the
unexpected pleasures and adventures available to all of us.
Through the chapters of this book, we are encouraged to keep learning, celebrate family, explore our own backyards, and try new things. Each chapter ends with a checklist of ideas and contains websites and other sources of information to aid in our exploration.
In one of my earlier books, I was fond of saying that I was not the cruise director for my children’s childhood. In a closing of the circle of my mothering life (I’m an empty nester), Ms. Herman reminds us I AM the activities director for the rest of my life. May if be filled with zest and delight!
