Don’t Box Them In! Preparing Your Young Children To Move Home

Moving is, for many people, a major upheaval. Even if it has a positive outcome you can still find yourself in a difficult situation when it comes to your children. Even if they are young enough to not understand what’s going on there is still a lot of change for your children to go through. And if they are old enough you are taking them away from everything that they know. But when it comes to preparing your children for a move, it all begins way in advance. Let’s see if we can help soften the blow.

Minimizing Your Preparation Stress

The most important thing to remember is that when you are preparing your children for a big move that you don’t get overwhelmed by the pressure of it all. If you find yourself stressed this is going to have an impact on your children. It’s crucial for you to be as prepared as possible. And this means making sure that everything is organized down to the smallest detail. If you are moving interstate you can book a company like Allied Van Lines way in advance. But you also need to start getting your children ready by helping them prepare their lives for what will await. You can do this by helping them prepare a book of their new home. This will help you to work on something with your children but it also gives them more control about what they would like to have in their room, but also demystify the process. You can have a look at Google Maps and get them used to the area. The more they know now, the better prepared they will be.

Giving Them Time To Vent

It’s not ideal if they have tantrums while you’re trying to get everything ready and even if they are excited about the move in one way they could very well be stressed in others. There will be times that they are going to be impenetrable. But we have to give them some space if they need it. We have to remember this is a massive change in their lives. And whether they are six months or six years old, they will have their own reactions to this situation. It might be stressful for you but it could be a lot worse for them in their little minds. And you have to prepare yourself for some sort of regression. Even if your toddlers have been potty trained there could be an accident or two.

Keep To A Schedule

Sticking to any routine that you have right now will keep everything consistent. When it comes to things like family meals or movie nights, everything needs to stick to a rigid routine. As difficult as this can be when you’re trying to get everything ready for the big move, the more familiarity your children have with the new place the less stressful it will be.

It is stressful for everybody concerned but while you may feel the pressure trying to get every little thing sorted, give consideration to what your children are going through. Try to make it as easy for them as possible.

Hi, I’m Christine

Have you been a wholehearted mother, but time, toddlers and teenagers have moved on? If you are wondering what comes next for you, you’ll feel right at home here.

Or, are you a mom for whom family life has been non-Pinworthy and parenting has been downright painful? I hear ya. There are many of us around.

Are you looking for a life full of exploration and adventure after the nest empties, but maybe you have no idea how to go about doing that? Stick around! We’ll explore adventures together to help you gain more clarity for your own path.

After a couple decades of writing books and articles about parenting, homeschooling and adoption, speaking to homeschoolers and other parent groups, and reaching out to the mom in the trenches who was trying to make the best of it - my kids grew up. Some grew up and grew away. I was determined to find a way out of the pain, emptiness and lack of direction.

For many of us, the journey starts with something we moms are not accustomed to. After years of caring for and serving others, sometimes we forget the beauty and wonder of US. We need to spend some time getting to know the parts of ourselves that have lain dormant, and take the time to explore interests and passions that we set aside.

I’d like to invite you to get the “What’s Next for Mom” workbook and jump into this growing tribe of Moms who are emptying the nest and filling the life! Let’s reignite your Mojo after Mothering!
