Dealing With Problem Items During Your Move

October 17, 2024 By Christine Field

If you’re planning a move, then you’re likely already thinking about what you can do to make the process quicker and easier. This isn’t a picnic at the best of times, and it can be even worse if you have items that are particularly big, bulky, or heavy. Helping them make the trip can be tricky, so here are a few options that are worth considering.

Can You Dismantle or Downsize Them?

One of the first strategies to manage problem items during a move is to assess whether you can dismantle or downsize them. For large furniture like beds, tables, or shelves, disassembling them can make transportation far easier and prevent potential damage. When preparing for the move, make sure you have the right tools and instructions to dismantle these items. Downsizing can also be a crucial step. Moving is an opportunity to assess whether certain items are still needed. If you have outdated electronics or appliances, consider recycling or donating them to minimize the burden during the move. Downsizing means fewer items to worry about and can help make the overall moving process smoother.

Work with Movers Who Can Handle Them

For items that are too large, heavy, or delicate to dismantle or move on your own, hiring professional movers with expertise in handling such items is essential. Items like pianos, large wardrobes, or antique furniture require special care and equipment. Not all moving companies are equipped to handle these challenges, so it’s important to choose one that specializes in moving large or bulky items. Expert movers can ensure that these problem items are transported safely, minimizing the risk of damage during the move. They often provide protective coverings and custom packaging to ensure the safety of fragile items.

Put Them in Storage for Now

If you’re not yet ready to move all your belongings into your new home, or if you need more time to figure out what to do with certain items, renting a storage unit is a great option. Secure storage sheds offer a secure and flexible solution for storing problem items temporarily. This is especially useful if you’re moving into a smaller space and need time to determine what will fit. Storage can also give you a chance to sort through belongings at a later date without the immediate pressure of deciding what to keep, discard, or donate during a busy move.

Sell or Give Those Items Away

Another effective way to manage problem items is to sell or give them away. Hosting a garage sale or listing items on online marketplaces can help lighten your moving load and even provide some extra cash for your move. If selling isn’t practical, consider donating large items to charities or giving them to friends or family members. Many charitable organizations will even pick up large furniture items, saving you the hassle of moving them yourself. Selling or giving away items not only reduces the burden but can also benefit others in need.

Make sure that your move can do as smoothly as possible, start thinking about how you’re going to handle any problem items as far in advance as possible.

Hi! I’m Christine!

It’s Never Too Late to Rewrite Your Story

If you’re standing at a crossroads—wondering where the “you” you used to know went—you are not alone.

Maybe you spent years pouring yourself into your family, homeschooling, raising kids with big needs and even bigger hearts.
Maybe you’re navigating a broken marriage, facing an empty nest that feels a lot emptier than you ever imagined, or grieving distance from your adult children.

You may be asking yourself: What happened to the life I dreamed of?
What happens now?

Here’s the truth:
It’s never too late to rewrite your story.

No matter the detours or disappointments, there is still hope.
There are still beautiful chapters ahead, waiting for you to write them.

My Story

Hi, I’m Christine—a marriage and motherhood survivor, a recovering perfectionist, and a woman determined to live the second half of life with purpose, passion, and a whole lot of pizzazz.

I spent decades doing what many women do: pouring myself into my family, raising children (some with big needs and even bigger hearts), homeschooling, navigating a long and complicated marriage, and trying to be everything for everyone. Somewhere in all of that, I lost parts of myself I didn’t even realize were gone.

During those intense years of deep mothering, I also wrote seven books for major Christian publishers about parenting, adoption, and homeschooling. I spoke at conferences, encouraged other moms, and tried to offer wisdom from the trenches.

And then—everything I held dear was challenged.

My kids started struggling in ways I couldn’t fix.
My marriage unraveled.
And so did the life I had so carefully built.

Divorce, the empty nest, the ache of adult children who didn’t launch quite the way I’d hoped—it all collided at once.

Sound familiar?

But here’s the good news:
It’s never too late to rewrite your story.

Now in my late 60s, I’m building a rich, meaningful life—not despite the hard chapters, but because of them.
I started dating again (and got married in May 2025!), I’m working full-time in my career as a criminal lawyer, and I’m dreaming bigger than ever.
I’m a woman of faith who’s walked through the fire—and found new life on the other side.

Let’s Walk This Road Together

If you’re wondering what’s next after the life you planned didn’t turn out the way you hoped, you’re in the right place.
We don’t have to shrink or settle.
We get to rise, reclaim, and sparkle.

So pour a cup of coffee (or something stronger), and let’s keep going, together.
