Beyond the Beach: Waterfront Adventures for Your Next Vacay

An older person in a kayak, wearing a life jacket, looks into a sea cave as they float on still blue and green water.

Some people love the beach’s charm, from its warm sand to the rolling waves and lazy afternoons under an umbrella. But what if your next trip could offer more than sunbathing and sandcastles? For those ready for something more exciting, it’s time to go beyond the beach for your next vacay. From lakes to rivers, coastlines, and open seas, there’s a whole world of water-based adventures just waiting for you to explore them.

Whether you’re craving a thrill, a quiet moment in nature, or a completely new experience, these activities can turn a typical getaway into something daring and unforgettable.

1. Jet Boating Through Hidden Canyons

Jet boats are fast and fun and can take riders to otherwise inaccessible areas. These boats open up access to dramatic canyons, narrow gorges, and remote rivers. This means you’ll now have the opportunity to see towering cliffs, glassy waters, and waterfalls you’d never reach on foot.

Yes, there are indeed places jet boats can go that hikers can’t, and the payoff is stunning. It’s the kind of experience that leaves you breathless in the best way, and one that adds a major “wow” factor to any trip.

2. Paddleboarding at Sunrise

Paddleboarding brings movement and mindfulness together in a calm, beautiful setting. Head out just as the sun begins to rise, and you’ll find yourself in a world that feels untouched and peaceful.

Gliding across still water while birds call in the distance is grounding and energizing. Paddleboarding is also a great low-impact activity that anyone can pick up quickly. For those looking to clear their head and reconnect with the natural world, this activity checks all the boxes.

3. Snorkeling With Vibrant Marine Life

Snorkeling transforms a simple swim into a vivid underwater adventure. You can dive into coral reefs, float above schools of colorful fish, and maybe even cross paths with a sea turtle or two. Snorkeling is a gentle, beginner-friendly activity that offers you a front-row seat to a part of the world many people may never see. Every glimpse beneath the surface is a small adventure of its own.

4. Kayaking Through Mangroves

Swap the crowded beach scene for a quiet ride through twisting mangrove tunnels on a kayak. Wildlife thrives in these ecosystems. Look for birds, crabs, and even the occasional manatee as you make your way through the maze-like roots. Kayaking here is peaceful and immersive; the kind of escape that makes you slow down and soak it all in. This activity is perfect for anyone craving nature, silence, and a bit of quiet beauty.

5. Sailing Into the Sunset

There’s something cinematic about sailing into the sunset with the sky glowing and waves gently rocking beneath you. This is an experience that mixes romance, reflection, and just enough motion to remind you that you’re on an adventure. Many sunset cruises offer hands-on sailing for those who want to learn the ropes, while others invite you to sit back with a glass of wine and watch the day end in style.

6. Deep-Sea Fishing

Think deep-sea fishing is only for the pros? Not at all! Even first-timers can reel in something impressive, from tuna to mahi-mahi. Out in the open water, you’ll feel empowered and maybe a little surprised at how much fun it is. Fishing combines patience with the thrill of the unknown, and if you’re lucky, you get dinner out of the deal. Most charters take care of everything you need, making deep-sea fishing a stress-free way to try something new.

7. Cruising to Private Islands

For a true escape, set your sights on a private or secluded island. Many coastal areas offer boat tours that take you far from the crowds to quiet beaches with nothing but soft sand, swaying palms, and a few cozy hammocks. Whether you’re looking for rest, reading time, or simply space to breathe, this is where you’ll find it. You won’t need to worry about beach vendors or loud music, just peace, quiet, and open skies.

8. Exploring Coastal Caves by Kayak

Coastal caves are natural wonders often missed by casual beachgoers. These hidden spots are best reached by kayak, as they’re tucked into rocky shorelines where larger boats can’t go. Inside, you’ll find cool air, reflective water, and the eerie beauty of stone walls shaped by the sea. This is a calm, intimate adventure that feels almost otherworldly, and you’ll definitely want to snap a few photos while you’re there.

9. Windsurfing for a New Challenge

Windsurfing is a great option if you’re craving something active and a touch daring. With little instruction, beginners can pick it up quickly, and once you find your balance, the feeling of catching the wind is pure magic. Windsurfing is one part sailing, one part surfing, and all parts fun. It’s also a rewarding way to break out of your comfort zone and build physical confidence while you’re at it.

How Do You Choose the Right Waterfront Adventure?

With so many options, the best adventure is the one that fits your mood, interests, budget, and the kind of memories you want to make. For instance, if you’re looking for peace and reflection, go paddleboarding, kayaking, or on a sunset sail. Do you want something more thrilling? Jet boating and windsurfing deliver excitement and don’t require prior experience.

Some adventures are ideal for solo travelers, like paddleboarding or deep-sea fishing. Others, like sailing trips or private island cruises, are great for couples or small groups. Think about what would feel most fun, accessible, and memorable for everyone involved.

Take the Next Step

Adventure doesn’t have to be extreme to be meaningful. Even a quiet paddling trip through mangroves can shift your perspective. So, go ahead, step off the beaten path and into something new. Your next great story might just begin on the water.

Ready to trade in the beach towel for something bolder? Pick your adventure, pack your curiosity, and go beyond the beach for your next vacay.

Hi! I’m Christine!

It’s Never Too Late to Rewrite Your Story

If you’re standing at a crossroads—wondering where the “you” you used to know went—you are not alone.

Maybe you spent years pouring yourself into your family, homeschooling, raising kids with big needs and even bigger hearts.
Maybe you’re navigating a broken marriage, facing an empty nest that feels a lot emptier than you ever imagined, or grieving distance from your adult children.

You may be asking yourself: What happened to the life I dreamed of?
What happens now?

Here’s the truth:
It’s never too late to rewrite your story.

No matter the detours or disappointments, there is still hope.
There are still beautiful chapters ahead, waiting for you to write them.

What You’ll Find Here

Real Mom Life is a place where you’ll find:

  • Real talk about motherhood, marriage, divorce, and all the messy parts in between

  • Honest reflections on faith, family, healing, and hope

  • Encouragement for the woman who feels forgotten—or who forgot herself along the way

  • Inspiration to rebuild, rediscover, and live with purpose, passion, and yes—a little pizzazz

  • A reminder that your story isn’t over—and the next part might just be the best yet

My Story

Hi, I’m Christine—a marriage and motherhood survivor, a recovering perfectionist, and a woman determined to live the second half of life with purpose, passion, and a whole lot of pizzazz.

I spent decades doing what many women do: pouring myself into my family, raising children (some with big needs and even bigger hearts), homeschooling, navigating a long and complicated marriage, and trying to be everything for everyone. Somewhere in all of that, I lost parts of myself I didn’t even realize were gone.

During those intense years of deep mothering, I also wrote seven books for major Christian publishers about parenting, adoption, and homeschooling. I spoke at conferences, encouraged other moms, and tried to offer wisdom from the trenches.

And then—everything I held dear was challenged.

My kids started struggling in ways I couldn’t fix.
My marriage unraveled.
And so did the life I had so carefully built.

Divorce, the empty nest, the ache of adult children who didn’t launch quite the way I’d hoped—it all collided at once.

Sound familiar?

But here’s the good news:
It’s never too late to rewrite your story.

Now in my late 60s, I’m building a rich, meaningful life—not despite the hard chapters, but because of them.
I started dating again (and got married in May 2025!), I’m working full-time in my career as a criminal lawyer, and I’m dreaming bigger than ever.
I’m a woman of faith who’s walked through the fire—and found new life on the other side.

Let’s Walk This Road Together

If you’re wondering what’s next after the life you planned didn’t turn out the way you hoped, you’re in the right place.
We don’t have to shrink or settle.
We get to rise, reclaim, and sparkle.

So pour a cup of coffee (or something stronger), and let’s keep going, together.
