Planning parties for your children can be really exciting as a mom, being able to create that magic for your little ones and celebrate their birthdays and milestones are what memories are made of. And if you enjoy cooking and baking, it’s a chance to get creative in the kitchen and whip up lots of delicious treats for your kids and your friends. If you have a birthday coming up and you’re planning on making the food yourself (or at least some of it) here are a few ideas for kid-friendly baked treats that would be perfect for a birthday party.
Birthday Cake
Making your child’s birthday cake can be a fun tradition as a mom, you don’t have to be the best baker to produce something that looks and tastes amazing. If you have the skills then you could go all out with a tiered cake and handcrafted fondant decorations. If you prefer more simple bakes then something like a Texas sheet cake would be ideal. The rich and chocolatey flavor is something that all kids will love, it can easily be decorated with whatever you like and it’s easy to cut up and divide into kid sized portions.
Cupcakes
These are always a hit with kids. As a bonus they’re pretty easy to make, can be done in all kinds of flavours and you can decorate them to look really impressive without tons of experience. Get yourself a piping bag and a couple of nozzles and you can create all different kinds of finishes- Youtube is a wealth of knowledge and can show you various piping techniques.
Cake pops
These are bite-sized balls of cake coated in chocolate and decorated with sprinkles or other toppings. If you’ve baked cupcakes and a few have turned out a little wonky then instead of throwing them away you can use them for cake pops. Simply blend up the cooked cake into crumbs and mix with frosting. Put in a stick and then dip in melted chocolate and decorate with sprinkles. They’re easy to eat and hold, and kids love them.
Sugar cookies
Cut these out in fun shapes like stars, hearts, or even the child’s age. You can use food coloring to make them bright and eye catching and add different flavourings to make them more interesting if you like.
Mini Puddings
This can be a fun twist on traditional puddings, such as cheesecakes, brownies and pies. The mini size is sure to be a hit with kids and the smaller size prevents kids getting too full on one thing.
Fudge
Fudge is so easy to make, and you can give it a birthday twist by making cake-batter fudge or decorating with fun sprinkles and decorations. You can dye fudge all different colours, add various flavourings and it stores well too so you even could box some up and send it home with the children in their goodie bag.
Vegan and Gluten-free treats
Do any of your tiny guests have allergies or intolerances? Thankfully there are many options for recipes that cater to gluten-free and vegan dietary restrictions that are still delicious. It’s always good to double-check the ingredients you are using since some food coloring and sprinkles may contain ingredients you wouldn’t expect, so do be careful and read the packaging thoroughly.
